When dealing with a police officer…

You must identify yourself to a police officer investigating a traffic offense or a crime, or you risk being taken into custody; if you give a false name, you will be subject to new charges

You do not have to answer any questions other than “What is your name.”

You do not have to tell the officer what you are doing.

You do not have to let the officer search your pockets, purse, backpack, car, or any other property of yours.

You can tell the officer “No!” when they ask to search.

If the officer tells you they have to search you, and asks you if that is all right, they really mean that they want to search you, and you can say no.

YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY DURING ANY QUESTIONING. SAY CLEARLY, “I want an attorney.”

If an officer tells you they are taking you into custody, do what they tell you. Resisting arrest is a separate crime you can be charged with — and you won’t get away.
